Founding of the "Berliner Handpresse" by Wolfgang
Jörg and Erich Schönig. In 1965 they are joined by Ingrid Jörg. Printing of old and new texts illustrated with original graphics. |
| 1965 | From this point of the "Berliner Handpresse" publishes one book for children each year. It is illustrated by Ingrid Jörg with original block prints. Authors are: Gerlind Reinshagen, Reiner Kunze, Astrid Lindgren, Bernd Jentzsch, Sigmar Schollak, Kurt Bartsch, Rolf Schneider, Martin Karau und Manfred Hocke. |
| 1973 | In addition to their regular publications mode by hand press the attempt to use the technical possibilities of offset reproductions in order to produce inexpensive books, results in the development of the series "Reihe Werkdruck", in which each year one rare historical text dealing with aspects of the history of the City of Berlin is published. |
| 1976 | For their 15th anniversary the "Berliner Handpresse" publishes - as their 53rd book - and at the same time - as their 1st special edition "The Royal Prussian Public Edict, concerning the abolishment of drinking beyond the limit an d of drinking for health reasons, Berlin 1718. |
| 1977 | From the first special edition they develop the series "Satyren und Launen". Three volumes are published annually with documents form the history of civilization in Prussia. They are edited by Uwe Otto who is also responsible for the series "Reihe Werkdruck". |
| 1981 | On the occasion of the 20th anniversary an exhibition an d readings by authors fo the "Berliner Handpresse" take place at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Kreuzberg. Participating are: Sarah Kirsch, Günter Kunert, Kurt Bartsch, Jürgen Beckelmann und Adolf Endler. Later that dy there is a festive gathering in the former "Hotel Esplanade". For this anniversary a catalog, including a complete bibliography, comes out under the title "Twenty Years of Berliner Handpresse". |
| 1983 | Following an invitation by the Goethe Institute the "Berliner Handpresse", among other things, organize an exhibition plus readings of some of their authors in Amsterdam. The title of this show is "Authors from Germany/Authors in Conflict in Germany", the texts are by Günter Kunert, Adolf Endler, Kurt Bartsch und Sigmar Schollak. |
| 1986 | The "Berliner Handpresse" celebrates their 25th anniversary with a number of exhibitions. For this occasion the German State Library (part of Preußischer Kulturbesitz) arranges a symposium under the topic of "From Hand Press to International Standardized Book Number". The "Literaturhaus Berlin" also organizes a literary reading at the former department store "Cato", located in the subway station "Schlesisches Tor". Sometime later a show under the title "Literary Circus - Literature at the Circus" takes place in a huge tent of a former circus, now called "Tempodrom". Participating authors, among others, are Günter Kunert, Adolf Endler, Stefan Heym and Ortrud Beginnen. For this anniversary a catalog, including a complete bibliography, comes out, entitled "Twenty-Five Years of Berliner Handpresse". |
| 1989 | On April 23, 1989 Erich Schönig dies. From then on the "Berliner Handpresse" is managed by Wolfgang and Ingrid Jörg alone. Since 1990 it has been part of their program to invite artists from time to time as guest illustrators for selected texts, e. g. Ute Hipfel, Brigitte Ullmann, Klaus Ensikat, Manfred Bofinger, Eva Johanna Rubin, Harry Jürgens, Albrecht von Bodecker. |
| 1991 | For their 30th anniversary a festive gathering is arranged in the rooms of their workshop. Reading from their works are Johannes Schenk, Adolf Endler, Christoph Hein und Franz Hohler, is also a music program of Jazz and Blues. |
| 1995 | After Uwe Otto's death the series "Satyren und Launen" and "Reihe Werkdruck" are now under the direction of Antonia Meiners. |
| 1996 | In the year of their 35th anniversary an exhibition is arranged in the old lecture room of the famous Professor of Medicine, Rudolf Virchow, at Charité-Hospital, which is part of the Humboldt-University of Berlin. At the opening Kurt Böwe reads texts of the "Berliner Handpresse". On the occasion of this anniversary The National Arts Club invites the "Handpresse" to show their works in their gallery in New York. A catalog comes out for this show. |
